Oceanside, Oregon // GSW 2023

Dan explaining his film vision to us at the Goonies/Oregon film museum

Last Fall, the GSW went on a 'spouse trip' down to Oceanside, Oregon for a week of relaxation, meals together, some fun outings, and nonstop laughter. It was a blast!

We would take daily morning walks, have breakfast together, and plan our day. We visited the Tillamook Cheese Factory, went to the Goonies and Oregon Film Museum, played at the beach tons, and even got a professional photographer to take friend pictures for us!

our 7 hour road trip on the bike - a first

Being on the bike for 7 hours straight was a bit much for me - we had to stop every couple hours so I could stretch and get some feeling back into my legs. If we were to do this again, I'd probably rather cap it at 5 hours a day or less. I almost fell asleep back there - it was so relaxing and smooth! My carsick friend also enjoyed a few rides on the bike around the curvy coast.

foggy mornings in Oceanside, OR

We enjoyed thrifting and shopping in the small town of Tillamook and eating at a little area that had food trucks. I found a great pottery shop that I made an impulse purchase -- a 3-stick candle holder-- that I still love and use regularly.

The Tillamook Cheese Factory; part of the production line

The Tillamook Cheese factory was interesting but...not what we expected. We expected a museum (?), not just 1 level of peeking in windows on the production line and then two huge concourse areas that are just for purchasing gifts in the gift shop and Tillamook products. It was basically getting you in the door just so you could....buy their stuff? I don't know, my expectations were different and they were...not met. It was staggering the amount of people in there, though!

early morning walks on the beach with Stefan and/or Emily

We took walks along parks with lighthouses, and probably more I'm forgetting, but we had a great time! Although I jealously want these two girls to myself for the majority of the trips, I'm always so glad we got to spend a week together just laughing hysterically with their spouses, too. I miss them even before we all leave the last day.

Home School Activities: Board Games We Love

My children have recently become enthralled in the world of board games. I was never a board game player. Sure, I remember long summer hours (days? it seemed like it..) spent around a Monopoly board, but I was never one to suggest to get out the cards, or a game. As my children have grown and they are now able to do activities with me, I started noticing that they really took to puzzles (when done all together) and the one or two board games I happened to have kept in the storage room. They were always asking to play Candy Land and so I figured I should branch off a bit. Over the course of the last year, I have found GREAT games, even ones that I love to play alongside them. The amount of 'teaching' they have gotten through games is jaw-dropping. Counting, team-playing, math related patterning, are just some of the skills I've watched develop. I asked before Christmas on facebook what my friends and their own kids loved and I was thrilled with the response. We have found ov...

Home School Resources: Links we Love

Source: ladyanndeborja.tumblr.com via Sarah on Pinterest Today I'm just sharing a list of my favorite go-to resources for home schooling. It's a list of where I find games, books, crafts, and fresh inspiration. Also included are articles I've loved about home schooling. One of my favorite websites about homeschooling, updated daily, is Simple Homeschool . It's a shoot off branch of SimpleKids & SimpleMoms, and they often have great giveaways, advice, and have concise and interesting topics. A friend recently guided me to World Book Online to find the general requirements of each grade. At the curriculum fair I went to in April, I remembered two vendors that I want to revisit if they return. One was Hepner's Legacy and the other was Miller's Pads and Papers (don't be fooled by the poor websites, they have great products at good prices). TED Talks . Go. Watch. Now. All of them. Awesome. Even if home schooling is a laughable topic to you, you're ...

Lukka's Birthday Interview // 17

17! You're FINALLY 17! You can drive independently, and you have read the manual, watched professional drivers and gleaned tips from others about this test that you've been dreaming about for years. You were given a car by a friend of ours, cleaned it to perfection, fixed it up in places, and have driven your sister and friends all over for the past week in near-unbridled joy. I am so happy for you (and I'd be lying if I wasn't happy for me, too)! You are such a mature and kind-hearted young man. You have big plans and are taking the steps to proactively execute them. You are sweet to your sister even if you'd deny it in front of your friends, and your relationship with her has come full-circle back to being as close as you two were in your littlest years.  You have so many goals and you work hard to achieve them! You prioritize what's important to you, and are willing to cut the rest. Although I sometimes wonder how you will remember to get to appointments with...
