If you haven't signed up for Lincoln Safari 2009 before...DO IT NOW! (I will wait patiently for you to return to my website, don't worry :)
This is one of the coolest FREE programs that Lincoln has done in the past year (this is only it's second year), and we wanted to get an early start this year. You can get your new materials (map and booklet) at the library when you trade your old booklet in (or, like us, just tell them what your "name" was so they can highlight your family's number and give you a new booklet) or sign up and get the free materials (canvas tote, crayons, rubbing booklet, and map).
The idea is to get families together and outside throughout the seasons and although, there are the most places to go in the spring and summer seasons, you don't have to stick by the rules! There are two corresponding pages for each park, giving you an idea for a nature craft at home and then the riddle/clue to find the post for the rubbing. I wish I had more pictures to explain this, but right after I took this picture (Larson Park), my camera battery died! Of course! I know it is cold outside, but there are 6 'winter' rubbings to go to and I'm determined to take Lu to them before the second baby arrives and we hibernate for a month.
Also, throughout the year, there are many activities that families can go to that have drawings for prizes--I believe the website will be updated soon, it still has all of the 2008 activities on it, but all the rubbing posts are up for 2009.
We only did a few of these last year, because Lukka was just too small to get the idea, but I think the general ages of 2-10 is perfect. Lukka really enjoyed this and will like it even more in the summer and fall I'm sure (at 19 months, he lost interest in the rubbing part of it quickly, but loved going to the parks).
All the parks are different, too, than last year except Pioneer's Park.
Go on, what are you waiting for?! Get outside already!

Want more information on getting your kids out in nature? Here's a great website (and Here, too) and here's a great book: Richard Louv's Last Child in the Woods.
