Name Explanations

A lot of people ask us where in the world we came up with our childrens' names. Well, I will tell you! Starting with the Bug, his full name is Lukka Karl Elijah Mast.

Lukka
No, I did not name my son for someone on ER (I've never even seen an episode!) or The Godfather, but it is originally an Italian name spelled Luca. It means "Light". I first heard the name while reading Audrey Hepburn's biography. She had a son named Luca and the moment I read that name, I adored it. I love the way it sounds! The reason I chose the "K"s instead of a "C" is first of all because I love the way Lukka looks, I love the "K" sound and knew that if I had a daughter (or another son!) I would have to have a name with a "K" in it!
Karl
Stefan's family heritage is German (of course, Canadian, too!) but the men on his side of the family have two middle names, so we wanted to stick with the tradition. Stefan's first middle name is also Karl, and it is his great uncle who still lives in British Columbia (I believe). Like father, like son.
(edit: My MIL just told me more ((Thanks!)): Karl is also Opa's father's name so it is Stefan's great-grandfather. It was his first name and he named his first son, it is dad's middle name, Stefan's middle name.)
Elijah
The second part of the family name came from my side. This is my grandfather's name on my dad's side, the only grandfather I ever knew, as my mom's father passed away when she was young. We also like that it is a biblical name.
Mast
Obviously, this is Stefan's family name and my last name.

Anikka Julyn Sky Mast
Anikka
This little beauty was first heard (no, I'm not kidding) on one of my favorite movies as a kid...Pippi Longstocking! I loved the name even when I was little! There are many different spellings of this, like: Anika, Annikka, Annika, etc. Stefan and I were also undecided on how to pronounce the name...phonetically like, "ANNA-ka" or more 'European' sounding, "Ah-na-ka"? Stefan liked the first, I liked the second (my main reason was because I loved the nickname, Ani, after my favorite musician, pronouced "Ah-ni"), but we decided on "ANNA-ka" because we didn't want her to have to correct people her entire life when they said her name wrong. The spelling is the way it is because it matches Lukka with two "K"s! Anikka means "Grace".
Julyn
This is the first of her two middle names, still trying to stick with the tradition, we swayed a bit on this one. It is a combination of family names--our mother's first names! Julie (my mom) and Jocelyn (Stefan's) mixed together we came up with a hybrid name Julyn, pronounced just like, Julian. I love this because it honors our mothers with their names, but I love Love LOVE the nickname "A.J." for a little girl! Again, perfect for us!
Sky
This was my original middle name I wanted to have before I even met Stefan (yes, I really did have my kids' names picked out before I even met the man I was going to marry!) Stefan was against this being the only middle name because it had no relevancy to our families so, once we figured out the first middle name, he was Ok with it. Honestly, the reason for this name is because I think it is beautiful. And I don't need any other reason!
Mast
See above.
Hope you enjoyed that little glimpse into our (somewhat) complex naming decisions!

I love the names you've chosen so thanks for sharing! It's fun to see how people come up with baby names. Two of the names on my list that I've had since eh....age 15 :) ...also come from Children's movies. I guess they just stick with ya!

I know a couple of girls with the name, Anikka (one k spelling, though), and they pronounce it ah-ni-kuh. I'm glad you did this post so now I know to call your sweet girl ANNA-kah.

Home School Activities: Board Games We Love

My children have recently become enthralled in the world of board games. I was never a board game player. Sure, I remember long summer hours (days? it seemed like it..) spent around a Monopoly board, but I was never one to suggest to get out the cards, or a game. As my children have grown and they are now able to do activities with me, I started noticing that they really took to puzzles (when done all together) and the one or two board games I happened to have kept in the storage room. They were always asking to play Candy Land and so I figured I should branch off a bit. Over the course of the last year, I have found GREAT games, even ones that I love to play alongside them. The amount of 'teaching' they have gotten through games is jaw-dropping. Counting, team-playing, math related patterning, are just some of the skills I've watched develop. I asked before Christmas on facebook what my friends and their own kids loved and I was thrilled with the response. We have found ov

July Reads

Birch Bay Sunset, rainbow hues July has been hot out here. When you live in the top story of an apartment building, and there's no air conditioning, it can feel just over the needle of uncomfortably warm when the day is above 76 degrees. We've kept blinds shut, windows open, and a fan continually blowing as it's perched in our living room window well. Just about the only thing I feel like doing after a long day is laying on the couch straight in the fan's air circulation path, and read a good book. I had some unique picks this month. * #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso  This book was just plain fun to read. Amoruso developed the iconic ebay store NastyGal way back when vintage selling on ebay was a thing. Now she's a millionaire with a kicking website that she started from scratch and didn't owe a dime to anyone else for. It's a great 200 pager with stories on dumpster diving for daily food, entrepreneurship tips, and being the backwards kid that no one t

Top 10 Books of 2017

early sunset in Ft Langley  I love reading all these "Top 10" lists of favorite books read throughout the year, so I'm adding my two cents.  I'm involved in a Book Club that I love with women from our church, a small group that meets every week and goes through a book every few months, my own list, books I'm reading aloud to the kids and  books I'm reading for educational purposes (think professional development). I took a look at all of those combined and this is what I got, in no particular order:  *  The Problem of God  by Mark Clark - I loved going through this academic apologetic book with my friends from church. It led us to great discussion, and good food for thought. I listen to Clark's sermons every week and so knew I'd probably love his writing style, too. If you have objections to Christianity, or are feeling confused about what to believe, this is a great primer.  * You're Smarter Than You Think  by Dr. Thomas Armstron
