Mother of All Garage Sales: Year 2...and What the Heck Else I've Been Doing

My Picasa picture "holder"...thingy... hasn't been working to my advantage lately. I've been taking pictures left and right to document the first few weeks of Anikka's life and just generally things we've been up to, but when I try to upload them, they either a) take FOREVER (as in, hours, literally) or b) get lost! It takes me forever to track them down. Sorry for the long time in between posts, but hopefully I'll get it figured out sooner rather than later.

For about two months, we've been hosting a community group at our house every Thursday night. We meet with two other couples and two single guys for a potluck and the food is always tasty! Since we only had a table that seated 6 comfortably, Stefan and I thought we would try to find an old long table on craigslist. We'd been looking for a few weeks and there was nothing more than a few tables that seated 8 and were a few hundred dollars. People...craigslist is like a garage sale...a few hundred dollars! Your tables are out of style! Get real!

So anyway, in regular Mast fashion, when you can't find exactly what you want....you figure it out and make your own! So Stefan and I wrote out the plans for a new table. A few hours of a Sunday later, and wa-lah! A new wonderful table that seats 14 comfortably and fits in our dining room (thank goodness, because it's heavy). The total price including the new benches to go around it? $90.00!!!
(Ok. It actually looks very small in this picture but it's 4 X 9 feet! Those tiny benches are our old ones, and go around the two small sides, the new ones aren't pictured. I'm working on a tablecloth that will fit it too, since the top is just 2 sheets of plywood. Pictures coming soon...)

Mother of All Garage Sales: Year 2
This year I scored big and spent little. Remember last year when I got brand new Keen shoes for $20? Well, ok, so I didn't find anything as good as that, but I was still happy with my $13 spent! I got a bundt cake pan (ok, I know, nerdy, BUT I'd been looking for one forever and this one was barely used!) Slaughter-House Five by Kurt Vonnegut (50 cents brand new!) and a grab bag of vintage notions (ranging from 1930's-60's unopened!)
Plus, tons of barely used adorable little girl outfits from 6-12 months (each 50 cents or $1). I am SO happy garage sale season is upon us. Although...this year, I am trying to follow in the footsteps of this lady...who ALWAYS finds the best stuff at garage sales! Lori, take me with you!
And we can't forget the growing girl...6 weeks tomorrow! Her newest nickname: Peanut Lady.

Home School Activities: Board Games We Love

My children have recently become enthralled in the world of board games. I was never a board game player. Sure, I remember long summer hours (days? it seemed like it..) spent around a Monopoly board, but I was never one to suggest to get out the cards, or a game. As my children have grown and they are now able to do activities with me, I started noticing that they really took to puzzles (when done all together) and the one or two board games I happened to have kept in the storage room. They were always asking to play Candy Land and so I figured I should branch off a bit. Over the course of the last year, I have found GREAT games, even ones that I love to play alongside them. The amount of 'teaching' they have gotten through games is jaw-dropping. Counting, team-playing, math related patterning, are just some of the skills I've watched develop. November - December Titles // 2024

 a moody December scene at Glen Valley I am just squeaking into the final few days for this post, and I am so glad I had Christmas break to boost a few more books into this somewhat meagre offering for Fall of 2024!  What did you read that you loved?  No Bootstraps When You're Barefoot by Wes Hall - This was a memoir I read for my bookclub, and although I found the first part very interesting, I read at least 75+ pages of his job (working his way up the 'wall street of Toronto') and I still don't know what he does.  This author grew up in Jamaica and honestly his ingenuity, quick learning ability, and resourcefulness helped him achieve amazing things, but it did feel a bit hollow toward the end. I don't think that was the intention, I just didn't overly love it.  The Hotel Balzaar by Kate DiCamillo - Again, I will read anything DiCamillo writes and be the first to have it ordered to my library!
