Letter-Learning Lukka: Preschool Time!

Lukka reading on the couch. One of his favorite activities with or without parents!
Posted by PicasaOur little Lukka is now three years old (3!), and he has become much more interested in reading, asking questions, and wanting to know "What does this say?" It's high time he learns some letters! I have a few fun things planned for the kids this year including Ani's first swim lessons, a fun 12 week Music Time for both kids (siblings under 2 are free!), a few days at the gymnasium to see if they like to tumble, and another round of swim lessons for Lukka. That might sound like a lot, but stretched over nine months is not overwhelming to me at all, especially when each spurt is 6 weeks here, 6 weeks there. The only exception is the music lesson from Around the Corner Music Studio, which will be done before Christmas.
I thought this year I could spend a good amount of one on one time with Lukka learning his letters; to sound out, and quite possibly, to encourage him to learn to read. It may take him a few months to learn to read, it may take him a few years, I'm okay with whatever happens, but when the curiosity is there...you run with it!
For his 'preschool curriculum' (or rather, a loose schedule of things I'd like to do with him), I've decided to follow Learn Your Letters, Learn to Serve. This is a huge 200+ page curriculum packet written by a mom of four boys who homeschools. There are so many activities in here, it could easily last his two years of preschool, so we are taking it easy. Each week we focus on a different letter, and with that letter, comes books, poems, activities, crafts, recipies, and examples on how to serve God while learning! An example page, if you're interested to read more, can be found HERE.
We're also helping Lukka learn the sounds of letters by using Leap Frog's Letter Factory DVD, a 30 minute cartoon that sings through the alphabet with sounding out each letter and showing what it looks like. Lukka has already loved watching this and when I ask him what letter makes what sound, he knows! Exciting stuff, since we've had it a week, tops.
Lastly, I bought these Montessori Sandpaper Letters off etsy. These are great for learning to write each letter, since the letters are large (vowels are even colored differently) and there is a dot where the actual 'writing' starts. The sandpaper's purpose is to allow the child to have a sensory 'feel' of tracing each letter, making it easier to develop a sense of writing letters. He has already played with these and likes them a lot, though if interested, I would try to find cheaper ones, as the ones I bought were a bit expensive once I saw the final product.
All in all, I am very excited to do this with Lukka. I have lots of one-on-one time with him during the day, since he normally wakes up 30 minutes before Anikka, takes his Rest Time 30 minutes after she goes down, and goes to bed almost an hour later. I think, though, that I will try to do all of our 'learning' before the day really takes off and we get busy. Routines are always easier for me to do in the mornings!
What are you excited about this school year your kids?

Be careful with those Leap Frog dvds. I got a few for Bella and she was reading within a month. We were totally unprepared!

Home School Activities: Board Games We Love

My children have recently become enthralled in the world of board games. I was never a board game player. Sure, I remember long summer hours (days? it seemed like it..) spent around a Monopoly board, but I was never one to suggest to get out the cards, or a game. As my children have grown and they are now able to do activities with me, I started noticing that they really took to puzzles (when done all together) and the one or two board games I happened to have kept in the storage room. They were always asking to play Candy Land and so I figured I should branch off a bit. Over the course of the last year, I have found GREAT games, even ones that I love to play alongside them. The amount of 'teaching' they have gotten through games is jaw-dropping. Counting, team-playing, math related patterning, are just some of the skills I've watched develop. I asked before Christmas on facebook what my friends and their own kids loved and I was thrilled with the response. We have found ov...

Home School Resources: Links we Love

Source: ladyanndeborja.tumblr.com via Sarah on Pinterest Today I'm just sharing a list of my favorite go-to resources for home schooling. It's a list of where I find games, books, crafts, and fresh inspiration. Also included are articles I've loved about home schooling. One of my favorite websites about homeschooling, updated daily, is Simple Homeschool . It's a shoot off branch of SimpleKids & SimpleMoms, and they often have great giveaways, advice, and have concise and interesting topics. A friend recently guided me to World Book Online to find the general requirements of each grade. At the curriculum fair I went to in April, I remembered two vendors that I want to revisit if they return. One was Hepner's Legacy and the other was Miller's Pads and Papers (don't be fooled by the poor websites, they have great products at good prices). TED Talks . Go. Watch. Now. All of them. Awesome. Even if home schooling is a laughable topic to you, you're ...

Lukka's Birthday Interview // 17

17! You're FINALLY 17! You can drive independently, and you have read the manual, watched professional drivers and gleaned tips from others about this test that you've been dreaming about for years. You were given a car by a friend of ours, cleaned it to perfection, fixed it up in places, and have driven your sister and friends all over for the past week in near-unbridled joy. I am so happy for you (and I'd be lying if I wasn't happy for me, too)! You are such a mature and kind-hearted young man. You have big plans and are taking the steps to proactively execute them. You are sweet to your sister even if you'd deny it in front of your friends, and your relationship with her has come full-circle back to being as close as you two were in your littlest years.  You have so many goals and you work hard to achieve them! You prioritize what's important to you, and are willing to cut the rest. Although I sometimes wonder how you will remember to get to appointments with...
