Let's Hear it For the Kids! Anikka Update

{I thought it would be fun to do a week of kid-related posts a) for the grandparents and b) because I need some perspective of "busy-ness for a good cause" and celebrating all things child-related seems to lift even the crabbiest of my moods. If you'd like to play along, leave your blog in the comment section so we can follow you, too! Each day will be devoted to a child, then some favorite books, and nooks.}

Anikka is now 19 months and I simply can't get over what a big kid she's getting to be. I have to be honest the 15 month mark was one of my favorite and I simply can't bear that my baby (Oh Lord, help me) is getting out of that sweet stage. She's of course, fun at just about any age (though I'd skip the first six weeks again...) but her independence is certainly her strongest character trait right now. She sometimes likes help, okay maybe 5% of the time she'll accept help, but generally, no.
I love the difference between boys and girls and I am just tickled I was lucky enough to have one of each. Ani just loves shoes, hats, and things in her hair (swoon!) and don't forget dresses and legwarmers. I think she knows we're onto her cuteness factor. And yes, I'm totally loving these things right now so I can remind myself when she's 13 what the deal is.
Lukka is Ani's favorite playmate and she loves to do whatever he is doing. Since they're so close in age, and of course, stuck with each other, they play together all the time and get along a lot of the time. Thank goodness. (Funny story, sort of: Lukka popped a kid in the nose when he pushed Ani down, and although we had a chat about that after the fact, I'm pretty sure I saw a wee bit of pride in Daddy for protecting "little sissy".)
Anikka likes to read, but doesn't have much of an attention span to sit and listen, she wants to TALK. And TALK, she does. At her age she is flying like crazy through vocab and is now repeating words she (likes?) hears. Her favorite are "doggie" and "dawwie" (that'd be dolly to those of us who don't speak piglet). She loves carrying around one of two soft dolls, taking them for rides in her stroller, and cooking up a storm with her mini wooden kitchen. She also loves to get dirty!

Love that little girl - she is so adorable (and Lukka is such a sweet little guys as well). I'm proud of him protecting his little sister :-)

Home School Activities: Board Games We Love

My children have recently become enthralled in the world of board games. I was never a board game player. Sure, I remember long summer hours (days? it seemed like it..) spent around a Monopoly board, but I was never one to suggest to get out the cards, or a game. As my children have grown and they are now able to do activities with me, I started noticing that they really took to puzzles (when done all together) and the one or two board games I happened to have kept in the storage room. They were always asking to play Candy Land and so I figured I should branch off a bit. Over the course of the last year, I have found GREAT games, even ones that I love to play alongside them. The amount of 'teaching' they have gotten through games is jaw-dropping. Counting, team-playing, math related patterning, are just some of the skills I've watched develop. November - December Titles // 2024

 a moody December scene at Glen Valley I am just squeaking into the final few days for this post, and I am so glad I had Christmas break to boost a few more books into this somewhat meagre offering for Fall of 2024!  What did you read that you loved?  No Bootstraps When You're Barefoot by Wes Hall - This was a memoir I read for my bookclub, and although I found the first part very interesting, I read at least 75+ pages of his job (working his way up the 'wall street of Toronto') and I still don't know what he does.  This author grew up in Jamaica and honestly his ingenuity, quick learning ability, and resourcefulness helped him achieve amazing things, but it did feel a bit hollow toward the end. I don't think that was the intention, I just didn't overly love it.  The Hotel Balzaar by Kate DiCamillo - Again, I will read anything DiCamillo writes and be the first to have it ordered to my library!
