Ani's 2nd Birthday Party!

This past weekend we celebrated Ani's 2nd birthday with a party. It was supposed to be back in February, but both kids were very sick over the planned weekend, so we moved it a month. We had great weather and lots of fun. I loved making the party food, and that simple bunting has followed us through many houses, birthdays, and parties, and always seems to look great.
I had gotten a few ideas out of a book I borrowed from the library, The Fairy Cookbook, and went from there on making them my own. It had a number of good ideas, but this book was ALL GIRL. Loved the idea of the popcorn/trail mix and I found some cute paper bags at Hobby Lobby to decorate with her name stamped on them. Fruit kabobs, cheese and crackers, lime sherbert punch (yum!), home-made mini strombolis, and pineapple cupcakes were all on the menu!
Now looking at these pictures I could have jazzed up the chalkboard easel with a menu, oh well, next time.
Here is the birthday girl in her cute 'party dress' and her birthday crown. She looked like a little wood sprite and was just totally enjoying every minute of being the center of attention. She is the most social of the whole family and loves to have new people over. She received tons of wonderful gifts including lots of summer clothes, pads of paper and stickers (her favorite) and enough socks to take her through the next century, which she needed!
Here's the kiddie table, complete with a grazing toddler cousin who they also love to play with (most of the time) :). We only have a party for each child every other year, then do something special with them the 'off' year. We're so glad we were able to entertain in our new house and that the guests enjoyed themselves. Ani had a great time, too, I think, and was so worn out that afternoon she took a 3 hour nap. My kind of party!

Home School Activities: Board Games We Love

My children have recently become enthralled in the world of board games. I was never a board game player. Sure, I remember long summer hours (days? it seemed like it..) spent around a Monopoly board, but I was never one to suggest to get out the cards, or a game. As my children have grown and they are now able to do activities with me, I started noticing that they really took to puzzles (when done all together) and the one or two board games I happened to have kept in the storage room. They were always asking to play Candy Land and so I figured I should branch off a bit. Over the course of the last year, I have found GREAT games, even ones that I love to play alongside them. The amount of 'teaching' they have gotten through games is jaw-dropping. Counting, team-playing, math related patterning, are just some of the skills I've watched develop. I asked before Christmas on facebook what my friends and their own kids loved and I was thrilled with the response. We have found ov...

Home School Resources: Links we Love

Source: ladyanndeborja.tumblr.com via Sarah on Pinterest Today I'm just sharing a list of my favorite go-to resources for home schooling. It's a list of where I find games, books, crafts, and fresh inspiration. Also included are articles I've loved about home schooling. One of my favorite websites about homeschooling, updated daily, is Simple Homeschool . It's a shoot off branch of SimpleKids & SimpleMoms, and they often have great giveaways, advice, and have concise and interesting topics. A friend recently guided me to World Book Online to find the general requirements of each grade. At the curriculum fair I went to in April, I remembered two vendors that I want to revisit if they return. One was Hepner's Legacy and the other was Miller's Pads and Papers (don't be fooled by the poor websites, they have great products at good prices). TED Talks . Go. Watch. Now. All of them. Awesome. Even if home schooling is a laughable topic to you, you're ...

Lukka's Birthday Interview // 17

17! You're FINALLY 17! You can drive independently, and you have read the manual, watched professional drivers and gleaned tips from others about this test that you've been dreaming about for years. You were given a car by a friend of ours, cleaned it to perfection, fixed it up in places, and have driven your sister and friends all over for the past week in near-unbridled joy. I am so happy for you (and I'd be lying if I wasn't happy for me, too)! You are such a mature and kind-hearted young man. You have big plans and are taking the steps to proactively execute them. You are sweet to your sister even if you'd deny it in front of your friends, and your relationship with her has come full-circle back to being as close as you two were in your littlest years.  You have so many goals and you work hard to achieve them! You prioritize what's important to you, and are willing to cut the rest. Although I sometimes wonder how you will remember to get to appointments with...
