Atlanta --> Florida // GSW Spring 2024

Atlanta down by the Aquarium. I wish I had 3 days here!

In February the girls and I had a quick 4 day (2 travel days!) time spent together. We needed a place that was 1 flight each, in a warmer climate (because...February and potential weather risks...) that our friend Ali to drive to from Virginia. Atlanta!

The closer the date got, I realized we would NOT be staying in Atlanta, but fulfilling my friend's dreams to go to Universal Studios and experience Harry Potter together. Ali had never been and she had been dying to go. I had just been there about 10 months before and loved it...it just meant a lot more driving.

Mardi Gras parade at Universal Studios. Incredible!

Before Emily got into town, Ali and I had time to check out the Atlanta Aquarium. We practically ran through it in two hours, but the shark area was incredible. A whale shark! Huge mantas! Hammerheads everywhere! Even dolphins blowing bubble rings! It's an expensive event, so I'd strongly recommend going for at least half a day, but we took what we could.

Once we picked up Emily we had a four hour drive ahead of us to get to where we needed to stay about an hour outside of Orlando. Once there, we all decided to sleep in the same bed (the sleeping arrangement areas were...weird. It was a cheap airbnb!) and basically collapsed at that point. Emily had had a full day parenting/working/homeschooling. Ali had by that point driven 12 hours, and I had been at the airport for 2 hour, commuted 1 hour prior to that, flew for 5 hours, then drove with them for 4 hours. I was incoherent by that time.

Universal Studios, Hogwarts in the background

We arrived at Orlando right as the parks were opening and rung Hogwarts and Hogsmeade out like old laundry. We did everything we could, drank way too much butter beer, watched an actual fight break out in line while we were waiting for the train, got Ali a wand, and watched the little side-shows I missed the previous year.

Atlanta Aquarium and the first hammerhead shark I've ever seen in real life

After our full day in Harry Potter bliss, we went to the other area of the park so the two of them could ride some more rides (me = nope), and I got to watch nearly all of the Mardi Gras parade, which was incredible! I think we went to sleep at that point nearby, and spent the next day driving back the 5 hours, and then doing our flights/drives. I told them I'm never doing that again. Four days, bare minimum, to fly somewhere....not including travel days! It was hectic, but as usual, a blast.

Home School Activities: Board Games We Love

My children have recently become enthralled in the world of board games. I was never a board game player. Sure, I remember long summer hours (days? it seemed like it..) spent around a Monopoly board, but I was never one to suggest to get out the cards, or a game. As my children have grown and they are now able to do activities with me, I started noticing that they really took to puzzles (when done all together) and the one or two board games I happened to have kept in the storage room. They were always asking to play Candy Land and so I figured I should branch off a bit. Over the course of the last year, I have found GREAT games, even ones that I love to play alongside them. The amount of 'teaching' they have gotten through games is jaw-dropping. Counting, team-playing, math related patterning, are just some of the skills I've watched develop. I asked before Christmas on facebook what my friends and their own kids loved and I was thrilled with the response. We have found ov...

July Reads

Birch Bay Sunset, rainbow hues July has been hot out here. When you live in the top story of an apartment building, and there's no air conditioning, it can feel just over the needle of uncomfortably warm when the day is above 76 degrees. We've kept blinds shut, windows open, and a fan continually blowing as it's perched in our living room window well. Just about the only thing I feel like doing after a long day is laying on the couch straight in the fan's air circulation path, and read a good book. I had some unique picks this month. * #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso  This book was just plain fun to read. Amoruso developed the iconic ebay store NastyGal way back when vintage selling on ebay was a thing. Now she's a millionaire with a kicking website that she started from scratch and didn't owe a dime to anyone else for. It's a great 200 pager with stories on dumpster diving for daily food, entrepreneurship tips, and being the backwards kid that no one t...

Home School Resources: Links we Love

Source: ladyanndeborja.tumblr.com via Sarah on Pinterest Today I'm just sharing a list of my favorite go-to resources for home schooling. It's a list of where I find games, books, crafts, and fresh inspiration. Also included are articles I've loved about home schooling. One of my favorite websites about homeschooling, updated daily, is Simple Homeschool . It's a shoot off branch of SimpleKids & SimpleMoms, and they often have great giveaways, advice, and have concise and interesting topics. A friend recently guided me to World Book Online to find the general requirements of each grade. At the curriculum fair I went to in April, I remembered two vendors that I want to revisit if they return. One was Hepner's Legacy and the other was Miller's Pads and Papers (don't be fooled by the poor websites, they have great products at good prices). TED Talks . Go. Watch. Now. All of them. Awesome. Even if home schooling is a laughable topic to you, you're ...
